ISDN CPE - Who We Are
ISDN hardware, firmware and software is designed to make voice and data communications more efficient and effective. Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) is an internationally accepted standard for high-speed voice and data communication. ISDN lines provide superior voice quality with a wide range of advanced services. ISDN data is transmitted at significantly higher rates of speed than regular telephone lines. ISDN also allows higher speed access for Internet users.Lucent Technologies delivers the quality and reliability ISDN users demand. We introduced the first commercial ISDN products in 1986. Lucent Technologies continues to create and evolve ISDN applications and technology for residential, business or community use.
Custom and National ISDN Software
There are two software versions of ISDN, Custom and National. Custom ISDN was developed and introduced in 1986. As the need for a common standard arose, National ISDN was created in 1991. National ISDN offers a subset of the features and capabilities of Custom ISDN and was adopted as the industry wide standard. Lucent Technologies offers both Custom ISDN and National ISDN software on the Lucent 5ESS®-2000 Switch. The standardization of ISDN is an ongoing process. The National ISDN feature set is continuously being updated.
Custom ISDN
Custom ISDN generally used by large businesses, is currently more feature-rich than National ISDN. It allows Centrex users to have similar service as a PBX User. Some special ISDN software applications are currently available only with Custom ISDN. These examples include: Client Profile Software, Advanced Communications Package, Automatic Call Distribution and ISDN PSAP-Public Safety.
National ISDN
The initial national offering, National ISDN 1 (NI-1) allows for:
- Terminal portability - any National ISDN telephone will work with any vendor's switch given the correct software level of National ISDN.
- Switch interoperability - allows circuit data and packet data calls between ISDN users on different switches.
- Service uniformity - features will work the same on all switches.
- Uniform provisioning - allows telephone companies to use the same process to initiate service on different vendor switches.
National ISDN 2 (NI-2) reduces costs and expands the addressable ISDN market with the following enhancements:
- Service uniformity - features will work the same on all switches
- Uniform provisioning - allows telephone companies to use the same process to initiate service on different vendor switches.
- Standard PRI
- Enhanced data capabilities
- Standard operations capabilities
- Standard billing
