Work at Home

By the year 2000, it has been projected that more than 25 percent of the work force will be telecommuting. That means in less than a decade, at least one out of every four employees for large corporations may work at home or at some place other than traditional offices. Lucent Technologies has worked with service providers to develop and support work at home possibilities and approaches.

Residential

The 5ESS® equipment switches ISDN voice and data, local voice calls, long distance calls, Internet access, and wireless PCS on the public switched network. This means the 5ESS® Switch family of equipment provides people means to reach advanced services by using their telephone to communicate by voice, with data, or through the internet.

Subscribers can use ISDN for higher speed access to the Internet which saves time and cost for accessing and downloading materials. People working at home can transfer or exchange data with their home office, with customers, or between associates, as easily as voice calls are made today. Advanced digital services allow three-way conference calls, ISDN voice mail, call waiting, multi distinctive ringing tones, call forwarding, call hold and other services to improve work at home productivity or allow personal communication at the user's time and place.

Software Features for Telephone Users

There are many special features that a subscriber can use to improve time and control telephone uses. Consider for example:

Call waiting lets a person currently on a call know through the use of an audible tone, that a second caller is trying to reach them. They may or may not decide to terminate their current call to take the incoming second call or may ignore the tone completely.

Call forwarding allows a person to preplan approaches to receive wanted telephone calls when they are in a different physical location. They can divert calls to another line. Even after call forwarding, a subscriber can continue to place or originate telephone calls. Call forwarding can, in some cases, allow the call to complete to a specific voice message.

Conference Calling allows three people to simultaneously listen to one telephone conversation, talk, and exchange information.

Automatic Call Back on Busy allows the calling party to continue to try to reach the telephone number that currently is busy. The software continues to monitor a busy party until that party's line is idle and then makes the connection. This saves people from continuous physical efforts to redial the telephone digits.
