Subscribers can use ISDN to access the Internet more quickly than through analog systems. ISDN is also used for transfering data to different office location just as easily as voice calls today. Advanced digital services provide three-way conference calls or ISDN voice mail, which is used by small, mid sized and "Work at Home" businesses.

Visiting the Hospital ... An Example

How about a patient getting medical consultation within a few minutes of taking an MRI or a CT scan as opposed to an anxious one or two days wait? The capability is here today with the use of the ISDN platform.

Digital quality and multiple data transmission modes of ISDN offer solutions that range from simple text file transfers to complex image/video transfer complete with concurrent voice consultation. ISDN offers the ability to transmit large, detailed images such as Xrays, MRI, CT scans using today's compression techniques. It takes about 150 images to view an MRI of a knee joint and that image can be transmitted over an ISDN line at 10 seconds per image. This means a doctor can receive a complete set of diagnostic quality images for the knee joint in about 30 minutes.

What better industry than health care to benefit from this wide range of services. Remote clinics and hospitals can be connected to the same database offering quick access to patient files. One-line access to a shared database ensure access to patient profile updates. All authorized health care providers (doctors, specialists, nurse) can have immediate access to these medical updates.

Processing the Insurance Claim ... Another Example

Processing insurance claims electronically between health care clinics and insurance offices reduces time and cost associated with paper forms. Already east coast insurance companies are using ISDN with local doctors to process claims and handle referrals.

Special Business Software Applications

Here are a few examples of software features used by mid and large businesses.

Call Pick up enables multiple susbscribers within the same call pick up group, to answer calls for any member of the group, such as support personnel answering the phone.

Call Waiting on an organization's telephone system may be able use different tones to identify if the calls originate from inside or outside an organization's phone system.

Call Transfer allows subscribers to transfer a call to another party; the subscriber who transfers the call can chose whether or not to remain on the line until the third party answers.

Call Barring permits a subscriber to bar placement of outgoing calls to specified destinations.
