The 5ESS®-2000 Switch is a digital time division switch with software to handle local calls, Toll/Tandem, Wireless, Operator Services, Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) and CENTREX service (Central Office) Services like call waiting, call hold and three-way calling.

CENTREX service and ISDN services provide special business or residential communication features. ISDN is widely used for higher speed access to reach the Internet's World Wide Web and to transfer data files by both home and business users. This gives users the ability to tranfer data, surf the net and still maintain voice calls.

Switch Introduction

The 5ESS®-2000 Switch was introduced in 1992 to add wide band services while it maintained compatibility with the original 5ESS® Switch. It expands bandwidth, processing power, and memory capacity and allow economic deployment of advanced switched services like fax transmission and data exchanges everywhere.

This added processing power maintains major real time reserve or call capacity . This is important to our customers since the switch can grow to handle new home and business developments within a community plus add new features for their existing customers, an investment protection for the public switch network providers..

Services for People

Customers today demand new advanced services. The software applications that provide such services make a difference in the marketplace for both service providers (telephone companies, cable TV providers, etc) and service users in both residential and business areas. Todays user sends data transmissions almost as often as voice calls. Interactive video and high speed data transmission allows business and industry to communicate world wide quickly, to exchange information in a reliable yet economically sound manner.

The Internet, for example, runs on a Bell Laboratories developed UNIX operating system. Users of the Internet find they gain web speed using currently available ISDN. Coming next is software to provide PCS (Personal Communication Services) and to link landline and wireless communications so people can easily move from one type of communication service to another to meet mobility and time needs.

Such sophisticated approaches as Intelligent Network™ allows switch owners to design and develop specific software applications, and to change their facilities arrangements.

The future with full motion switched video access for video conferences is spurred by the the growth in international trade and the cost of international travel. The network will continue to evolve to meet the high bandwidth needs of multinational corporations.
