FCC sets deadline for wireless 911

On June 12, 1996, the Federal Communications Commission ruled that within eighteen months, all local telcos, cellular, and wireless services are to support wireless, portable 9-1-1 for sorting and dispatch to the caller's cell site.

According to Mike Meyer, Systems Engineer for Lucent's Network Software Center, the FCC ruling is good news for many municipalities. "Now every community can offer their residents big city emergency response services. There's a lot of pressure on public safety planners to contain costs by going with a system that is flexible and cost-effective system that doesn't require high maintenance costs and won't become obsolete in two years."
