Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN)

ISDN hardware, firmware and software is designed to make voice and data communications more efficient, faster and more effective. ISDN lines provide superior voice quality with a wide range of advanced services. ISDN data is transmitted at significantly higher rates than regular analog telephone lines.

There are two versions of ISDN, Custom and National. Custom ISDN was developed and introduced in 1986. As the need for a common standard arose, National ISDN was created in 1991. National ISDN offers a subset of the features and capabilities of Custom ISDN and was adopted as the industry wide standard. Lucent Technologies offers both Custom ISDN and National ISDN on the Lucent 5ESS®-2000 Switch.

Internet Access

Lucent Technologies' Internet Access service is a comprehensive offering that enhances the network providers infrastructure and establishes the network as the primary "intelligence" vehicle for easy, flexible, and secure access to user-valued information, collaboration, and commerce.

A newly introduced offer for the Internet provides new products to enable service providers to effectively address the rapidly expanding dial-up data traffic demands on their networks.

We also recognize that consumers and work-at-home business users need more bandwidth to fully realize the potential of Internet information. Communication providers, in the midst of meeting customer demand for greater access speeds, must maintain operational costs and capture revenues of local call data services market.

  • Access Interface Unit (AIU) - A new cost-effective non-blocking line unit for the 5ESS® Switch that will be generally available in 1996. This line unit initially supports enhanced performance and reduced operational costs for analog connections, but will also support ISDN and ADSL in the future.
  • ISDN PRI Expansion - The 5ESS® Switch SM-2000 can be expanded to handle more PRI terminations in 1996. This capability will lower service provider operational and first-time costs.
  • Provisioning Solutions - The Switch Element Manager Operations Systems will shadow a switch's translation/feature database, making it easier and faster to provision ISDN lines without placing strain on the embedded switch call processors. In early 1997, additional Applications Software will be made available to further enhance the ISDN provisioning process. Provisioning audit services are available to pinpoint trouble spots.

Additional components of the Internet Access offer are:

  • Access Gateway
  • Scalable Domain Name Server
  • Content Server Platform/Applications
  • Partnership Marketing Programs
