The 5ESS®-2000 Switch VCDX (Very Compact Digital Exchange) is the smallest configuration of the 5ESS®-2000 Switch family. The VCDX provides a complete range of switching solutions to telecommunication service providers and their customers. The VCDX configuration offers the same unvaried quality and reliability as the largest Lucent 5ESS®-2000 Switch.

Lucent's VCDX switch can support the needs of smaller sized locations such as campuses, office complexes, small communities, new sub-divisions, rural areas or suburban locations with small line size applications to provide "state of the art" telecommunication services at an affordable cost. The Lucent line of switches vary in size to meet the communication needs of communities from this small VCDX to a large 5ESS®-2000 Switch Metropolitan or International Gateway switch.

VCDX subscribers can use ISDN to access the Internet or to transfer data to a different office location just as easily as they make voice calls today. Advanced digital services provide three-way conference calls or ISDN voice mail, which is used by small, mid sized and "Work at Home" businesses.

The VCDX stand alone 5ESS® Switch efficiently provides services such as voice telephone service, equal access, ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network), ISDN Voice Mail, National ISDN and CENTREX service (call waiting, call hold, etc) services plus various wideband applications. The switch supports Carrier Identification Code (CIC) expansion and Interchangeable Numbering Plan Area (NPA) as required by regulatory agencies. Then at the VCDX is also being used as an overlay to provide ISDN and other advance services. Wireless service can also be provided by the VCDX, either alone or with landline service on the same switch.

Architecture

The VCDX switch can support various configurations using a single 5ESS® Switching Module (SM) to handle the call processing. The SM is controlled by a sophisticated UNIX (R) software-based workstation which provides administrative and maintenance capabilities. A mimimum configuration of two (2) cabinets that are six (6) foot high x 29.9 inch wide x 23.6 inch deep in size is necessary and thus it fits in a small space.

The VCDX switch provides a high quality digital switch solution that can easily evolve into various larger configurations as subscriber growth increases (or its componets can be reused). The VCDX switch can serve up to 14,000 access lines with the SM-2000, or 1,500 access lines with a classic switching module.

This means residential, small-mid sized business, "Work at Home" telecommuters, cable companies or competitive access providers (CAPs) and other new markets find the VCDX attractive. The VCDX allows many types of customers to start small and grow as a customer base expands or to overlay existing equipment to provide advanced services or can be used to modernize small town or rural communities.

The 5ESS®-2000 Switch VCDX will meet the U.S. governments' RUS (Rural Utility Service) formerly known as the Rural Electrification Administration (REA) specifications.
