Intelligent Pathway™ (a.k.a. telemetry) provides a non-intrusive telephone access to customer premises for data transfer between a host computer and customer premises equipment. It is available through 5ESS® and 1A ESS™ switches. A telemetry call is accomplished without ringing the customer's phone, interrupting telephone service(s), or being affected by line side features.
What are the advantages? The telephone network is the most robust, reliable and cost competitive means to communicate with the largest number of fixed and mobile end points. The telephone network is in place and engineered for the most demanding communications applications. The network is capable of supporting low to medium bandwidth services with the same level of reliability and efficiency.
And it's fast. A typical Intelligent Pathway™ (a.k.a. telemetry) call can read 4 meters at a single site in about 6 seconds. The Lucent 5ESS®-2000 switch is capable of placing many calls simultaneously based on telemetry network engineering. Thus the ability to read all meters or to access all control devices within a given time period is made possible through the switch's engineering and the telemetry network.
Intelligent Pathway™ is a platform that will support multiple applications that require device-to-device data communications using analog modem communications. Examples are automatic meter reading (utility), energy load control (utility), loop-back line testing (telephone), information dissemination (internet/data), and messaging (telephone).
