Small Switches & Remote Switch Modules

Cost-Effectively Serve Smaller Markets

The Lucent Technologies 5ESS®-2000 Switch Product family includes a range of switches in varying sizes to meet diverse communication needs. Supporting the same unrivaled features and AnyMedia™ functionality as the larger 5ESS®-2000 Switch, the Compact Digital Exchange (CDX) and Very Compact Digital Exchange (VCDX) are smaller, stand-alone configurations that offer the same industry-leading quality and reliability as our largest switch.

Enhance Service Offerings & Improve Competitiveness

These small switches have a comprehensive feature set and are ideal, cost-effective solutions to meet the needs of smaller-sized locations such as campuses, office complexes, small communities new subdivisions, rural areas or suburban actions. Offering capabilities such as equal access, ISDN, voice, Voice Mail, National ISDN and Centrex, as well, various wideband application's, the CDX and VCDX offer more business advantages and flexibility than any other similarly sized switch. Once deployed, service providers will be able to:
  • Move into new markets faster and more reliably.
  • Position for the future by simultaneously providing AnyMedia wireline and/or wireless services, including all voice, video and data applications, using the same switch.
  • Grow each switch cost-effectively, module by module, as business expands.
  • Preserve current investments while moving into new service areas.
  • Overlay existing equipment and provide advanced services, even if the area is currently served by a switch incapable of providing such services.
  • Cost-effectively modernize the telecommunications networks in small communities.

The Compact Digital Exchange

The CDX is a stand-alone 5ESS®-2000 Switch configuration that provides services such as Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS), equal access, ISDN Centrex, and SS7. The CDX supposes up to 37,000 local lines with an SM and SM-2000 as host and using six Remote Switching Modules (RSMs). With the same features and AnyMedia™ functionary as the larger metropolitan 5ESS®-2000 Switch, CDX offers a cost-effective method of delivering advanced digital services to customers in rural suburban, campus, office parks, or other locations.

In addition to typical host exchange configurations, the CDX Switch supports up to six remote sites and two local switching modules or one SM-2000. Remote line units can support basic and supplementary services and ISDN capabilities. For greater network reliability, remote switching systems provide all the duplex switch services of the host exchange and can sustain complete stand-alone functionality if remote-to-host facilities are out of service.

The Very Compact Digital Exchange

For small communities, rural areas and private network locations, the 5ESS®-2000 Very Compact Digital Exchange (VCDX) offers an elegant, cost-effective solution. The smallest configuration of the 5ESS®-2000 Switch product family, it can support a single switch module (SM or SM-2000), and serve up to 20,000 access lines using SM-2000, or 1,500 access lines using the switch module.

Most of the features supported by the 5ESS®-2000 are available on the VCDX -- features that emerging market customers demand, such as work-at-home, distance learning and telemedicine. Having the same rnodular, distributed architecture as the 5ESS®-2000 Switch, the VCDX can evolve into various larger configurations utilizing almost all of its existing components.

The Remote Switch Module

The flexible, distributed architecture Of the 5ESS®-2000 Switch enables a remote switching module to be located in a different Local Access Transport Area (LATA) and up to 600-miles from the host. This provides existing Service Providers and emerging competitors with the ability to expand networks and service offerings cost-effectively, using RSMs where previously this may not have been feasible,

Remote line units can support basic and supplementary services and ISDN capabilities. Remote Switching Modules (RSMS) provide all the duplex switch services of the host exchange and can sustain complete stand-alone functionality and retain billing data if remote-to-host facilities are out of service. This gives greater network reliability.
