This office created a program called the central Alabama Computer Crime Working Group. Part of that program was the dispensing of laptops to local police departments. Here's something I didn't know. The Secret Service, along with other federal law enforcement offices, uses student interns. I'm not sure what purposes they are being used, but I can't imagine they use a normal background check on these kids. During Dec 2004, there was a spike in counterfeited money being passed around in the Birmingham area. The Birmingham News reports that the special agent in charge of this office was Chris Murphy. Although this item doesn't pertain to the Birmingham office per se, DHS used to have a website to review news for the day. At one time it was open on the Internet but now they have close it. If you go to http://64.239.47.23/dhs/index_main.aspx?d=050102 you'll get a login screen. One article from 27 Jan 2005 is still in Google's cache, and you'll see that it is a clearing house for news for all the groups in DHS, including SS. The login page also tells me these people are using two login names and passwords. Where are the phishers when you need them? >:P

Some black SS agents ended up suing their own agency for bias discrimination back in 2000. You can read the whole thing at http://srslawfirm.com/casesdocs/ss/Amended-Class-Certification-Motion.pdf. Note that agents from SS and ATF hold a "Good O' Boys Roundup" in Tennessee, which is billed as a racist gathering. Read the whole document and keep saying to yourself- this is the Secret Service? Rest assured, their ways have not changed.
