___________________________ -/Controversial News Response/- ---------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------- Canadian Student Arrested for Downloading Software ----------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A student at the Elk Island public school division east of Edmonton in Alberta Canada has been caught "trying to download hacking software". This article does not say if he was successful in his attempt or what he planned to do with the software or even what the software was. The student was charged by the RCMP with unauthorized use of a computer. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- First let me say that this is an article that I read on HNN (www.hackernews.com). I have to say that this is kind of nonsense. First of all, there was no proof that the kid ever used the programs on that network. Correct me if I am wrong, but what is considered a "ub3r c00l h4ck1n6 pr0gram5" to the cops, and what is considered hacking to us is totally different. To a police officer, a port scanner could be considered a hacking program. Where is the expert on this case? This is a rediculous accuzation as far as I am concerned, when the police refuse to even release what actually happened. I think that what this comes down to is that there are so few hackers in Canada, that a curious teenage kid cant even squeeze a fart out of his ass without law enforcement arresting him with no cause. Hundreds of pages a day get defaced, and the law enforcement agencies have their thumbs up their ass chasing around kids downloading "hacker tools". Give me a "beeping" break. If someone out there knows more about this, please email me at (thehex@hfactorx.org). I would really like to respond to this newspaper ad. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------- CSIS Lost Classified Floppy Disk ----------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Canadian Security Intelligence Service lost a floppy disk containing classified information. The disk was found in a phone booth in 1996 in downtown Toronto. Recently it has been learned that the disk contained information in plain text about confidential informants and contacts, information about covert operations and details about training exercises. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I really feel bad for this employee. Sheeesh...what the hell was he thinking. I hope that the Canadian government is a little more careful at choosing their employees from now on. Poor guy must have had one sucky day! This is really one of the STUPIDEST things I have heard in a long long time. I suspect that someone must have been spying on him...why else would someone break into a car to steal a floppy disk. Was it made of gold? I can't really comment alot on this article, I just thought it was worth putting in here because of the STUPIDITY. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------- JavaScript and ActiveX May Be Banned by DOD ------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Department of Defense is reportedly considering banning ActiveX and JavaScript from military computers citing security concerns. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Read more at: http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/stories/news/0,4586,2398182,00.html?chkpt=zdnntop ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Is the government finally getting wise? Well, if this is what they plan on doing to cut down attacks, they might just have something. But hey, for every lock, is there not a key? for every computer, is there not a password? The government can try to crackdown on the government site attacks, but why avoid the real issue? Maybe the government needs to hire some better "experts"? I understand what they are trying to do, but there is never going to be a fullproof method of computer security..and why? We know as much or more then the government...and not everyone can be bought. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------- Internet Intoxification Used As Defense ------------------------------------------- A teenager who has been accused of issueing a threat against Columbine high school via the internet will argue that he was suffering from 'Internet Intoxication'. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Read more at: http://www.nandotimes.com/technology/story/body/0,1634,500154005-500189672-500806798-0,00.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- mmmm...for those of you who know me, you are already going to know what I have to say about this. :) What kind of rediculous excuse is that? "I was intoxicated from playing Quake2...it wasn't my fault, the mutants made me do it!" Oh gimme a break...I would like to go to the trial and sit in the back with a box of noisemakers. If we cannot claim responsibility for our actions, then what kind of person are we? Certainly not an honorable one. After these students and teachers were slaughtered, this moron has the nerve to send a threat to the school!? and then blame it on the internet!? You have got to be kidding me...if he is that vulnerable to electronic devices, what would happen if his canopener told him to start a peace march in Libya? I think that some humor needs to come from this issue, being how rediculous it is. To be honest I feel bad for this kid, but at the same time..what kind....of...moron would do that and not expect to get caught? He will most likely get off with a slap on the wrist...maybe community service... Well people, one thing that this article can show you is that you are responsible for your own actions, and noone else but you. Stay outta trouble if you dare :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Questions? Comments?
