Cyberpunk also misses the latest stuff but you can go to the > free kevin site and download archived news. There are lots of issues here. Katie Hafner is Markoff's ex, but she was (and still is) absolutely committed to being fair and accurate in that book. She wrote the book without Kevin's input, which was Kevin's choice. The things that are problematic in that book (at least to me) are the ways in which Kevin is characterized as a "darkside hacker" and the things that bother Kevin are mostly the details that he claims are wrong, which portray him in a negative light (such as stealing his mom's tip money to rent motel rooms to hack from). Most of those details came from Lenny. For what it's worth, Markoff had no input on the book. The most he did was read the galley proofs. Hafner is absolutely outraged by what is happening to Kevin. The Esquire article gives a good sense of that. And she does have a Free Kevin sticker on her car and might be a very useful ally in getting the word out. I'd recommend _Cyberpunk_ and Littman's _The Fugitive Game_. If you read _Takedown_ skip the first 200 pages, unless you are truly curious about how Shimomura feels about Julia and how someone ruined his Xmas vacation. I have heard that Shimomura and Markoff had a falling out over money and that they no longer speak to one another. Some justice . . . . In response to what book you should read. Definately read The fugative game, and cyberpunk, those were both great books. But dispite what everyone else is saying, i think that you should read takedown that way you can see it from the other prospective. Dont get me wrong, i am totaly in support for kevin. I just think for in order to be able to make just arguments you should read about it from the other side. No personal attacks but i think that it is ignorant to just jump on the bandwagon and yell free kevin, when you have only read material in kevins favor. later pat ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Nov 1998 14:52:43 -0800 (PST) From: Support Services Subject: Re: [mitnick] Miramax picture How is this relevant to Kevin Mitnick? My point is that the government treats all hackers like disposable cameras -- unless you have a big name and are revered in sociatally-accepted social circles (have a brand name), you're considered disposable by the justice system. Such is the case with Kevin. Though he takes excellent pictures, and has a photographic memory, his optics come into question -- and his end product is unfairly tainted. I don't think this is fair. Admittedly, Kevin may not be the Nikon of hacking -- but Voichtlander or Rollei take good pictures too. Let's not forget what has already been committed to film, my friends. You're participating on a mailing list from an account which is shared by several people, one of whom you think is an idiot? Man. As if we didn't have enough trouble with people spoofing mail, now we have feuding people actively and consentually sharing an address. Am I the only person who finds this odd? I mean, normally when someone participates on a mailing list, they want to have some control over their posts. From a shared account, any moron could post a message saying any old stupid thing and we would all blame anyone else using the same account. Sure, we can accept that sales@wherever is a shared account to provide more customers with faster service. Just like a common feeder line at the bank. But what would possess you to participate in a public forum from a shared account? I mean, you would think the people using it would at LEAST use distinctive signature files so we would know on some superficial level who it was from. Not like it wouldn't be trivial to fake the signature of someone else, but then -- considering who we are and where we are -- there has to be a certain level of trust on this list in any case. Basically you've just told us that whenever mail comes from that account, it could be from any drooling idiot who happened to be at the keyboard. I would think most intelligent folk would want to avoid being associated with such people, and at least get a different account to post from. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- As the fire burneth a wood, and the flame setteth the mountains on fire; So persecute them with thy tempest, and make them afraid with thy storm. - ---------------------------[ Psalms, 83:14-15 ]--------------------------- Caliban Tiresias Darklock | "Hell, you don't Darklock Communications | know me." A very good observation, considering that most email this account receives also possesses those qualities. - ---- FREE KEVIN MITNICK - While Supplies Last http://www.babe.net/exposed/exposed.html ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Nov 1998 18:03:50 +1000 From: Reeza! Err, oops. Support Services, you owe me a new keyboard. Coffee & keyboards don't co-exist to well. ;) Now, can we let this thread die a quiet death? After doing some light research on the topic, I believe that KM did commit some crimes, but not all the ones he has been indicted for- and he must be extremely confident that access to the encrypted material will substantially strengthen his case. What could it be??? Reeza! Subject: [mitnick] Encrypted Material Something I've been pondering,,,, The gov't says it will not use the encrypted material against KM at trial, because they cannot break the encryption. Let me say that again... they say they cannot break the encryption. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ In light of the news reports that KM will be given access to a computer to review the electronic evidence against him, and supposing he is granted access to that encrypted material, how will he decrypt it? If it is pgp, he would need the pgp prog with his secret key- something not likely to happen. If it is self-decrypting once the pass phrase is entered then it would be possible to decrypt, but is that a realistic supposition? The bottom line question is, what encryption program was he using??? Reeza!
